Local author Kari Sundberg preserves the voices of twenty area veterans in a powerful new book out now.
The Things They Carried Home, a new book by Kari Sundberg, of Grygla, honors the voices and experiences of twenty local veterans. The book was just released this September.
Told in a narrative style that reads more like a novel than a newspaper article, Sundberg’s writing brings emotion and vivid detail to each story. Readers won’t just read about these veterans...they’ll feel the memories, the homecomings and everything these men carried with them long after their time in uniform.
Sundberg spent over a dozen years as the writer and editor of the Grygla Eagle newspaper. During that time, she interviewed many veterans and always felt their stories deserved more than a single print run. This is her first book, created to give those stories a permanent place to land.
Veterans featured:
Steve Anderson, Raymond Benson, Ronald Byklum, Wallace Byklum, Danny Bragg, Ronald Engelstad, Wayne Hanson, Andy Jacobson, Roland Klamar, Glen Limesand, John Lovly, Benji Marquis, the Mork family, Lyle Nelson, Luke Nordvick, Jerry Sistad, Glenn Sundberg, Leland Thomas, Jeremy Verbout and George Wikert.
Some of these men are still with us. Some have since passed on. All left a mark.
This independently published project was made possible in part by a grant from the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council, with funding from The McKnight Foundation.
