Local artists bring rural roots to life at Warroad RiverPlace Gallery.

The Warroad RiverPlace art gallery has transformed into a space of heartfelt memories from yesteryears and a celebration of time-honored practices that continue to bring people together thanks to the exhibit, Rural Traditions, by Grygla-based potter Betsy Saurdiff and watercolorist Debbie Dahl Aune of Gatzke.

Blueberry picking. Hunting. Fishing. Baking. Grain bins. Canned preserves. And, of course: Family. Weaving stories from their lives in northern Minnesota, the artists invite gallery visitors to tell their own as they interact with this unique combination of two- and three-dimensional pieces designed to nourish both body and soul.

Saurdiff and Aune are both retired art educators and recipients of several awards, recognitions, and grants for not only their artistic expertise, but also their arts advocacy.

“For the love of art and the passion that drives it, both Betsy and Debbie are leaving a legacy across our entire northern region. Their impact is immeasurable as they champion and educate about the arts, transforming the lives of countless students and community members,” says John Davis, executive director of Warroad RiverPlace. “You are invited to experience Rural Traditions, which will no doubt engage the senses, leaving you transformed, as well.”

The RiverPlace gallery is free to visit Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (103 State Avenue). Rural Traditions is on view now through July 19, 2025.
